We were asked to develop a site-wide masterplan that enhanced the atmosphere and functionality of the plot. The direction was to create a traditional yet modern country garden that felt harmonious with its surroundings. A large Yew hedge will provide a separation within the main garden allowing for two individual characters to form. A new brick and stone terrace will become the threshold between the house and the garden with multistem Crab Apple trees providing an ornamental yet traditional atmosphere, their presence airing on the informal, linking with the fruit orchard found further into the wider landscape. The planting will be a modern interpretation of a traditional scheme, plants such as Roses, Veronicastrum, Thalictrum, Scutellaria, Iris and Asters will knit between drifts of ornamental grasses to capture movement and provide long seasonal displays. Low Yew hedges will create a framework to selected planting beds which continues the Winter structure, adding a heritage atmosphere to the beds.
Winter flowering trees and shrubs will add a layer of interest during the darker months, positioned alongside pathways to encourage engagement through flower and scent. To contrast the formality, areas have been kept natural and understated. Meadow has been introduced to blur the lines between the cultivated spaces and the wilder boundaries. Hazel, Elder and Hawthorn have been chosen to connect with species found in the surrounding hedge lines, adding a layer that sits comfortably within the meadow. The paddock has been reimagined to incorporate a large pond, native copses and wandering grass paths between meadow.
