The garden is designed to be a predominately planted space with seating areas positioned throughout. Structural elements such as organically clipped topiary will provide year-round definition against a naturalistic planting scheme, providing a relaxed character. Trees and shrubs have been chosen to add depth, layering and heritage, each providing flowers and many such as the Sambucus, Aronia and Malus an edible contribution. In pleached and multi-stem forms Crab Apples have been chosen for their informality and ornamental value. Their flowers signifying the beginning of Spring followed later in the year by red fruits that sit suspended throughout the winter months. A Hamamelis has been positioned in proximity to the seating areas, its Winter flower arrises as the garden falls dormant and it’s scent a treat. Privacy is created through pleached Malus, Carpinus and a mixed species hedgerow, the species have been selected for a variety of fruits, flowers and seasonality, providing a natural character to the boundary of the garden.

The planting palette has been kept muted and sympathetic, tones of white and pink allow the garden to feel restful and delicate. Melica unifolra has been used to create a natural fringe to the edges of the planting beds, complemented further by Geraniums, Epemediums and Persicaria. Combinations that will slowly fuse to create a textural and verdant understory. Tricyrtis, Anemones, Cimicifugas and Kirengeshomas add the late season displays sitting alongside the ferns in the shadier spots. Climbing Hydrangeas, Loniceras and Roses will be used to clothe the walls in vegetation, a selection that includes flower, scent and evergreen foliage, utilising and celebrating the building’s high walls.
